Mubarak and Clinton discuss Mideast peace

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak made a phone call to US President Bill Clinton in which they exchanged views on the future of peace process in the Middle East in light of the outcomes of the May 17 Israeli elections.

The phone call also tackled the latest developments and changes toward a number of issues in the international arena as well as regional issues of joint interest.

The sources said the phone call concentrated on the means of activating the peace process in the Middle East, the importance of Egypt's initiative in the coming period to enhance the peace process and the importance of US neutrality toward the peace process.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa stressed in a statement to the BBC the importance of reviving the Middle East peace process on its various tracks, according to the guidelines it was based on and from they point they broke off.

The Egyptian FM added: "There is a need for work in order to salvage and reactivate the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, taking into account the results agreed at the time, the negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks reached in the past."

The Egyptian FM called upon the new Israeli prime minister to realize the importance of peace and adherence to the land-for-peace formula.
