EU approves in principle project to boost Arab exports to Europe
Regional-Kuwait-European Union, Economics, 5/19/1999
Head of the Italian-Arab Chamber of Commerce, Sergei Marini, announced in Kuwait Tuesday that the European Union has given its support in principle to a project to boost Arab exports to Europe and was waiting for the final agreement to finance it.
Marini, who is currently in Kuwait, told the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA that the project is an example of joint cooperation between the chamber, the Arab League and the European Union.
The project consists of setting up a Rome-based committee with representative from each of the three bodies to help market and export Arab-made products to Europe.
He underlined that the average of trade exchanges between the Arab states and Europe remains below standard. He cited the example of trade between the Arab world and Italy which does not exceed $13 billion, accounting for 6% of Italy's total exports worldwide.
Marini is heading an Italian trade delegation to Kuwait, part of a Gulf tour to boost bilateral relations.
According to KUNA, trade between Italy and Kuwait reached $426 million in 1997, a 10.2% increase in comparison with 1997.
Italian exports to Kuwait reached $401 million while Kuwaiti exports were worth $25 million.
