Syria, Jordan to cultivate border areas
Jordan-Syria, Economics, 5/19/1999
The Jordanian weekly al-Bilad said on Tuesday, quoting well-informed sources at the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture, that there are some 27,000 dunums of Jordanian lands along the borders with Syria which are uncultivated, adding that this area can be planted with fruit trees and cereals and can be irrigated from al-Yarmouk river waters.
The paper reported that according to these sources, some 20,000 dunums of uncultivated lands are so because they are under barbed wires and border checkpoints.
The paper added that a Syrian-Jordanian joint committee is embarking on studying the question of investing the joint border areas and enabling their owners to invest them and obtain access to the area.
