Arab League and Comoros
Comoros-Regional, Politics, 5/19/1999
Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid sent a message on Tuesday to the secretary general of the Organization of African Unity, Salem Ahmad Salem, including the results of the talks the AL chief held with the foreign minister of Comoros, Muhammad al-Ameen Seif al-Yamini, on the situation on these islands.
The message was handed over by AL Assistant Secretary General for Arab Affairs Ahmad Bin Hali to the organization's ambassador to the AL, Shabaan Qashout, in Cairo on Tuesday.
In a statement, Bin Hali said that during the meeting proposals were made to maintain Arab-African moves over the Comoros islands and to send a joint fact-finding commission to Comoros to learn about the real conditions in the islands.
Meantwhile, Comoros' representative at the AL, Muhammad Ali Zia, said that Comoros' foreign minister left Cairo for Morocco in the course of his tour which covers Morocco, Algeria, Burkina Faso in order to explain the reality of conditions in his country.
Zia said that what took place in Comoros was not "a military coup," rather it "was a change in the authority to salvage the country from civil war."
Zia has called on the Arab League to back the islands' security as the country is a member of the AL.
