Oman to take new steps to encourage Israel for peace
Oman, Politics, 5/19/1999

Omani Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Yussef Bin Alawi Bin Abdullah has expressed in a statement to the BBC on Tuesday his country's readiness to take steps to encourage the new Israeli government chaired by Ehud Barak to proceed forward in making a breakthrough in the Middle East peace process.

On the possibility of his country revitalizing certain relations between Oman and Israel, the Omani minister did not rule out the possibility of achieving this matter. He indicated that the new change in Israel and the victory of Barak in the Israeli elections will be conducive to his country taking strides to resume contacts with Israel which had been frozen three years ago.

Bin Alawi justified this stand in his country's desire to support and encourage the Middle East peace process and promoted Barak for doing so. The Omani minister described Barak's victory in the elections and assumption of the post of Israeli prime minister as "a new movement to give the Middle East peace process a push forward."

SANA in this respect said that the Omani minister has asserted the importance of Barak's government resuming peace negotiations on the Syrian track from the point they at which they broke off.

In a statement to the BBC on Tuesday the Omani minister called on Barak's forthcoming government to take positive and tangible steps towards boosting negotiations with the Palestinian Authority so as to announce the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
