Mubarak confers with Ethiopian premier
Egypt-Ethiopia, Politics, 5/19/1999

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday received Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi who arrived in Cairo earlier in the day. Present at the meeting was Egyptian Foreign Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri. Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments concerning the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea and means of finding a peaceful solution to this conflict in the framework of efforts exerted by Egypt to contain the crisis.

Zenawi's visit to Cairo comes following the recent visit made by Ethiopia's President Assyas Afworki to Egypt.

Eritrean President Assyas Afworki agreed to hold direct talks with the Ethiopian prime minister in order to settle the border dispute and halt the fighting between the two countries.

Afworki, moreover, confirmed that his country is deeply concerned with setting the dispute with Eritrea.

President Mubarak informed Zenawi on the outcome of Mubarak's talks with Afworki.
