Dismissal of veiled Turkish deputy from parliament denounced
Turkey, Politics, 5/18/1999

Disputes increased between Turkey and neighboring countries because of denaturalizing parliamentary deputy Merve Kavakci, accusing her of carrying US citizenship without the permission of Ankara, which is considered a violation of local law, after she provoked the secular authorities by entering the parliament wearing a headscarf.

A Turkish - Iranian dispute erupted because of Turkish accusation against Iran that the latter supports the veiled deputy.

In addition, a member of the political bureau of the Turkish Islamic Virtue Party, Yousseria Hamdan, denounced the punishment of Kavakci for entering the parliament wearing a headscarf, considering this punishment to be a brutal interference with her personal freedom and a real lapse for democracy.

Hamdan said the confusing stance of the government has received a great and deep rejection from Arab and Islamic countries because it is a position against a recognized religious matter.
