Saudi Arabia welcome EU Middle East peace process role
Saudi Arabia-Regional, Politics, 5/18/1999

Saudi Arabia has reiterated its steadfast solidarity with the Palestinian people in order to restore all their legitimate rights. It also commended the recent stand adopted by the European Union concerning the Middle East peace process and the Palestinian question.

Following a meeting of the Saudi Cabinet held on Monday, the Saudi minister of information said in a statement that the Saudi cabinet praised the EU's assertion of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the call advocated by the EU to establish an independent Palestinian state.

The Saudi minister stated that this EU stand is a good step towards supporting the Middle East peace process and the right of the Palestinians to regain self-determination.

On the consultative Gulf summit held in Jeddah last week, King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia has praised the efforts made by heads of the participating delegations to meet Arab national aspirations. The Saudi king also praised the visit held by Iranian President Muhammad Khatami to Saudi Arabia, noting "the brotherly relations between the two countries."

The Saudi king asserted the importance of such visits between Iran and Saudi Arabia in supporting and consolidating their cooperation. He added that these visits will have "a positive impact on the region and the development of relations among the Islamic states."
