Mordechai proposes a peace conference to King Abdullah
Jordan, Politics, 5/18/1999
The Jordanian weekly al-Hadath quoted European sources in Amman as asserting that former Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai had proposed to King Abdullah of Jordan the idea of convening a peace conference in the Middle East in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
The sources said this proposal, which was discussed during Mordechai's meeting with King Abdullah in Amman at the end of last month, aimed at convening a conference in Amman to revive and reactivate the peace process in which Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Lebanon, Syria and Israel can take part in addition to representatives from the US, Russia, the European Union and other countries which are directly involved in the Middle East peace process.
The sources added that Mordechai said such a conference can be convened without Syria and Lebanon if they refuse to join it, adding that discussions then between King Abdullah and Mordechai centered on ensuring the resumption of the Palestinian - Israeli negotiations.
The sources indicated that King Abdullah had promised to study this proposal but gave no commitment to it.
