Iran's position concerning Gulf islands
United Arab Emirates-Iran, Politics, 5/18/1999
An Iranian source at the Iranian delegation accompanying Iranian President Muhammad Khatami in his visit to Saudi Arabia has repeated Iran's position in clinging to the two islands of Greater and Lesser Tanb.
The Iranian sources asserted that the two islands are Iranian territories "but the Abu Mousa island can be negotiated upon according to the agreement signed in this respect." The Kuwaiti daily al-Anba quoted the Iranian source as asserting continued dialogue and contacts between Iran and the United Arab Emirates despite the "problem of the three islands."
The Iranian source revealed that Iranian Defence Minister Ali Shamakhani will hold visits to the Gulf Cooperation Council states in order to discuss means of strengthening military and defence relations and cooperation with these states.
