The door is open for a Syrian-Palestinian summit
Syria-Palestine, Politics, 5/17/1999
Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council Abbas Zaki said the door is open before a Syrian - Palestinian summit and that it is just "a matter of time." He added that this summit will discuss issues rather than a protocol.
In statements to the Jordanian daily "al-Arab al-Youm" issued on Saturday, the Palestinian official said, "We are pleased over the Syrian stand" as President Hafez al-Assad has promised that Syria will not "permit Israel to take the Palestinians separately and that Syria is with any Palestinian step that surpass the ceiling of the provisional period."
Zaki described his recent visit to Damascus together with the Palestinian delegation as successful by all means. He added that the forthcoming days will witness and confirm this fact, especially as the coming phase is that of the final solution which covers issues of the "refugees, the borders, the waters," noting that all these issues are linked to Syria, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan.
He added that during its visit to Damascus, the delegation met with Palestinian opposition leaders George Habash, Nayef Hawatemah and Ahmad Jibril and members of their political bureaus, with Hamas' representative in Damascus and with Khaled al-Fahoum.
He added, "All await the appropriate measure and will not give up participating with us in that."
