Iranian-Syrian agreements, protocols signed on Khatami's visit to Damascus

Following the Iranian president's visit to Syria, which concluded on Saturday afternoon, a joint communique was issued both in Damascus and Tehran on talks conducted between the two presidents following the three-day official visit by Iranian President Mohammad Khatami to Syria. The communique highlighted the two countries' identical positions on all Arab, Islamic and international issues and their desire to improve bilateral relations.

In the presence of President al-Assad and President Khatami, several agreements, understanding memoranda as well as executive programmes, were signed on Saturday afternoon at al-Chaab palace in Damascus. These agreements were reached during the talks held between the Iranian and Syrian sides during the Iranian president's official visit to Syria.

The following are the agreements and memoranda signed:

-An understanding memorandum on economic and trade cooperation, signed on the Syrian side by the minister of economy and foreign trade, Muhammad al-Imadi.

-A judicial cooperation agreements, signed by Syrian Minister of Justice Hussein Hassun and Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi.

-A maritime transport agreement, signed by the Syrian minister of transport, Mufid Abdul Karim.

-An executive program of tourism cooperation signed on the Syrian side by Tourism Minister Danhou Dawoud

-The Syrian education minister represented the Syrian side in signing the executive programme of agreement from the year 1999 to 2001;

-A memorandum of understanding on customs cooperation was signed on the Syrian side by Finance Minister Muhammad Khaled al-Mahayni;

-A memorandum of understanding on health cooperation was signed by Syrian Health Minister Dr. Muhammad Iyad al-Shatti; and

-An understanding memorandum on co-operation in the area of sport was represented by the chairman of the Syrian General Federation of Sport, Samih Mudallal.
