Ethiopian warplanes strike Eritrean port
Ethiopia-Eritrea, Politics, 5/17/1999

Eritrea announced on Sunday that the Ethiopian warplanes struck the coastal city of Maswa.

AFP quoted Arab diplomatic sources as saying that the bombardment hit several oil warehouses in the city of the port, in which fires broke out. For its part, the Eritrean army command asserted that the bombardment resulted in striking several oil warehouses in the city's port.

On Sunday, Ethiopia stressed that one person was killed and three other were wounded as a result of Ethiopia's bombing for an Eritrea's naval base and an oil reservoir near Maswa port on the red sea on Sunday.

The spokeswoman for the Ethiopian government said in a statement that great losses were inflicted on the naval base and the reservoir as well as the port, adding that the planes returned back their base safely. She said that the Ethiopian warplanes launched an air strike on Zalameisa front that resulted in inflicting damage on the supply centers and military units in the area.

In Asmara, the spokesman for the Eritrean presidency told journalists that the Ethiopians failed in realizing their objectives. He said that a reservoir was bombarded in the port, killing one person and wounding three.

It is the first time that the port of Maswa has undergone bombardment since the eruption of the border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea one year ago.
