King Fahd confers with Khatami

Official talks started on Saturday night at al-Salaam palace in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia and Iranian President Muhammad Khatami who started earlier in the day an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

President Khatami expressed to the Saudi king thanks over the warm welcome he and his comanions received during their visit. He praised the bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Iranian president also extended an invitation to King Fahd to visit Iran.

In a similar reply speech, the Saudi King praised the development of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. He added, "These relations required to be always backed and strengthened for the interests of the two peoples and countries and the Islamic nation," thanking the Iranian president for his invitation.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. They reviewed the whole conditions on the Arab and Islamic arenas.

King Fahd invested the Iranian President with the "Bader al-Kubra" (named after the battle Mader waged by the prophet against the non-believers) medal.

On the Saudi side the meeting was attended by Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, the ministers of the interior and the foreign affairs and several Saudi cabinet ministers and princes. The Iranian side was attended by Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi, the minister of oil, the Iranian president's office chairman and the Iranian ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
