Asmara: Sudanese opposition to discuss Mahdi and Torabi meeting
Sudan, Politics, 5/15/1999

The Sudanese Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leadership is to hold its coming meeting in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, at the end of this month chaired by Mohammed Othman El-Merghani, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, with the participation of Ummah Party leader El-Sadek El-Mahdi, Sudan People's Liberation Army leader John Garang and the leaders of Sudanese opposition factions abroad.

The meeting will discuss the initiative of El-Mahdi and the outcomes of his meeting with Hassan El-Turabi, the head of Sudanese National Council (parliament), in Geneva on May 1 and the readiness of the Sudanese opposition for peace talks with the political forces in Sudan.

Official sources in the DNA said that any negotiation with the Sudanese government will not be implemented except in light of the agreement of all DNA's leaders in a complete meeting of the leadership.
