Romanian - Moroccan ties to be strengthened, more support on Sahara
Morocco-Romania, Politics, 5/15/1999
Speaker of the Romanian chamber of representatives, Ion Diaconescu, left this Saturday Morocco at the end of a five-day visit to the kingdom.
The Romanian official, who was accompanied by law makers from various political parties, was received by King Hassan II.
He told the press his talks with Moroccan officials covered the evolution in Morocco and means to consolidate bilateral economic and cultural exchanges.
He added that Romania has proposed a series of means to rev up trade exchanges with Morocco, mainly encouraging the presence of Romanian enterprises in Morocco and the consolidation of bilateral cooperation in education.
Diaconescu went on that it was decided to create a Moroccan-Romanian parliamentary friendship group to enhance cooperation between the two parliaments.
The Rumanian official expressed his country's backing to Moroccan stand regarding the Sahara issue. He said Morocco's claims over the Sahara, a former Spanish colony that the Kingdom retrieved in 1975 under the Madrid accord, are justified and legitimate.
