Speaker of Morocco's house of representatives meets UMA secretary general
Maghreb, Politics, 5/15/1999

Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Abdelouahed Radi, conferred Friday in Rabat with Secretary general of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), Mohamed Amamou, on ways of reactivating the Maghreban union and enhancing inter-Maghreban complementarity.

The two sides underlined the importance of the Maghreban follow-up committee meeting due next week in Algiers and voiced hope that the gathering would allow the Maghreban union consolidate its various bodies and reactivate their actions to serve the interests of the Maghreban people.

The Arab Maghreb Union was set up in 1989 by Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Mauritania with a view to enhancing economic complementarity between the five Maghreban countries.

Next week's meeting of the UMA follow-up committee is the first meeting of the gathering since 1994.

Strained relations between Morocco and Algeria, due to Algeria's direct involvement in the Sahara issue, have brought the Union to a standstill.
