Syrian-Iranian summit

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and his Iranian counterpart Muhammad Khatami resumed their talks at 6 p.m., (Damascus Local Time) in a plenary meeting. It was attended by members of the visiting Iranian delegation and the Syrian ministers of foreign affairs, the economy and foreign trade as well as the Syrian ambassador to Iran and the Iranian ambassador in Damascus.

Another meeting followed, including Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and his Iranian counterpart, Kamal Kharazi. Talks dealt with bilateral-regional and international issues which covered the developments of recent international conditions and their impact on relations among states, international blocs and legal organizations on the key interests of peoples and countries.

Talks also dealt with the condition in the region's various aspects, anti-Arab and Muslim issues, dangers arising from them, responsibilities shouldered by peoples and countries clinging to their sovereignty, independence and forms of cooperation which ensure a successful confrontation of these dangers.

The two Presidents reviewed bilateral relations and indicators of their development. They showed satisfaction with this development and a mutual desire to increase, consolidate and expand it in various areas for the benefit of the two peoples and countries.

Upon his arrival in Damascus, the Iranian president and members of the accompanying delegation on Thursday visited the martyrs cemetery's monument on Qasyoun's mountain, which overlooks Damascus and laid a wreath at the memorial of martyrs.

The Iranian president was accompanied on this visit by the Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, who is also head of the honor mission.

Earlier in the day the Iranian President arrived in Damascus. He was welcomed at Damascus International Airport by President Hafez al-Assad, Syria's two vice presidents, the prime ministers and his two deputies, the Cabinet ministers and high-ranking Syrian officials.

The Iranian President is accompanied by an official delegation including Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi, Housing Minister Ali Abdol-Alizadeh, Iranian central bank governor Nour Bakhash, and the director of the Iranian president's office.

At the Tishreen palace, the residence for the Iranian President, President al-Assad and President Khatami held a meeting between members of the two sides' delegations.

Before leaving Tehran for Damascus, President Khatami said his visit to Syria comes in the context of mutual cooperation, respect and understanding between the two countries. He added there is a state of unprecedented cooperation and understanding between Iran and the Arab states, a matter which would "achieve security and stability in the region."

The Iranian president concluded his statement by asserting his confidence that, "Visiting Syria and a number of the Arab states will continue to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between Iran and the said Arab countries."
