Poor agricultural production causes loss of over $200 million
Morocco, Agriculture, 5/13/1999

Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Habib El Malki said on Wednesday that this year's poor agricultural production, mainly of wheat, will entail a loss of 40 million working days, ie over $200 million.

The minister said during the question time at the house of representatives that the government will try to remedy the situation and ensure a normal supply of staple products.

He forecast that this year's output would not exceed 35,600 tons, leading Morocco to import 27,000 tons of soft wheat.

Agriculture accounts for 18% of Moroccan GDP and 30% of export receipts and employs 40% of the Moroccan active population.

Although only 13% of farming lands are irrigated, they contribute considerably to meeting national food needs and generate 1.65 million jobs, including 250,000 permanent jobs.
