El-Mahdi urges opposition to support discussion with the government
Sudan, Politics, 5/13/1999
The leader of the Sudanese opposition Ummah Party, former Prime Minister El-Sadek El-Mahdi, delivered the Sudanese opposition leadership a note that dealt with the reasons that pushed him to meet recently in Geneva with the head of the Sudanese Parliament Hassan El-Turabi.
El-Mahdi asked to discuss the note in the coming meeting of the Democratic National Alliance, a grouping of Sudanese opposition parties, urging it to support the principle of discussion with Khartoum on the basis of the Sudanese opposition note to the government at the end of last year.
El-Mahdi said in the note that a meeting took place with the Sudanese foreign minister and minister for presidential affairs through an Egyptian initiative after communications made by Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, following the meeting of the fourfold committee with the Egyptian minister, during which the committee agreed on the principle of discussion according to the note presented by the opposition inside Sudan.
He added, "Two months ago, a Sudanese mediator called us and suggested seeing Hassan El-Turabi ... if El-Turabi accepts the reference to a political solution as determined in the note."
He added, "On the 1st and 2nd of current May I met El-Turabi in Geneva, and we agreed on opening a political discussion that could lead to a political agreement."
