Violence in Algeria
Algeria, Politics, 5/13/1999
The Algerian daily al-Youm has reported that army forces bombarded the Mazrana woods in Tizi Ouzou province using heavy artillery. Some 30 Armed Islamic Group members stay in the area, according to information given by three gunmen who surrendered themselves recently to the Algerian security sources.
The paper noted that the Algerian security forces discovered a mass grave in Housh al-Makhfa of the Muftah municipality to the east of the capital Algiers and that so far no bodies were taken out of the place where a large number of bodies are expected to be found.
The paper said one citizen was wounded when he was shot upon crossing a fake barrier installed by the armed groups in Bu Eish district in Bouira province, some 70 km from the capital Algiers.
For its part, the Algerian daily al-Aseel said that the armed groups detonated the water reservoirs in al-Qadereyah, while another bomb was detonated in the same area and the explosion resulted in killing one citizen and wounding another three.
