Efforts to issue Palestinian currency
Palestine, Economics, 5/13/1999
Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on Wednesday in Cairo received a message from the Palestinian government pertaining to the efforts currently exerted to issue a Palestinian currency.
The chairman of the monetary department in the Palestinian government, Fuad Bseiso, said in a statement to journalists after he handed over the message to the Arab League chief that there is an interest in the Palestinian government at highest AL levels in issuing a Palestinian currency.
He explained that he had discussed with the AL chief necessary arrangements to convene an Arab seminar in collaboration between the Arab Monetary Fund, the Egyptian central bank and certain Arab banks in order to discuss the issuance of the Palestinian currency.
Bseiso added that a symposium will be held at Arab League headquarters during September, prior to the meeting of the Arab ministers of finance and the economy in order to submit the topic of the Palestinian currency to them.
