Report: Aden army leaders warn of changing Yemen to another Algeria
Yemen, Politics, 5/13/1999
Reuters reported that Zein eddine al-Muhdar, better known as Abeen, the opposition Yemeni Islamist who was sentenced to death under the charges of killing foreign tourists, has warned against the possibility of changing Yemen to another Algeria, if the court of appeals upholds the sentence issued against him.
In a written message he sent to Reuters, al-Muhdar urged his partisans for self-control and not to be hesitant in their reactions, which, according to their threats, include killings of certain Yemeni ministers or ambassadors and foreign citizens in Yemen, until the issuance of the appeal sentence submitted by the defence committee.
Earlier this month, one of al-Muhdar's followers threatened in a telephone message to the London-based al-Hayat daily one Yemeni Cabinet minister to assassinate his "secular men" if the Yemeni government executes al-Muhdar.
During al-Muhdar's trial, the Islamic Abeen Aden Army group threatened the US and British ambassadors to Yemen.
