Sudanese opposition leaders to meet within days
Sudan, Politics, 5/12/1999
The Sudanese opposition Democratic National Alliance's leaders are to hold a meeting in Cairo within the coming days, to discuss the outcomes of the meeting held recently in Geneva between Ummah Party leader and former Sudanese Prime Minister El-Sadek El-Mahdi and Hassan El-Torabi, head of the Sudanese Nation's Council.
El-Mahdi met the day before yesterday with Mohammed Othman El-Merghany, the head of the Democratic National Alliance and the leader of the Unionist Party.
Meanwhile, Saleh Galal, the manager of the office of the Ummah party in Egypt and the Middle East, said that El-Mahdy and El-Merghani have agreed to review the outcomes of Geneva meeting at the coming meeting of the opposition grouping and to take a suitable decision toward it.
He added that he will meet with Egyptian officials during the coming two days to inform them on the outcomes of El-Mahdi's meeting with Turabi, hailing the Egyptian role as supporting the current efforts to ensure peace and stability in Sudan.
Galal said that what happened at the Geneva meeting was just a consultation and exchange of ideas on different Sudanese issues, including specific indications upon which they can agree. He said that El-Mahdy did not negotiate under the name of Ummah party but he played the role of mediator between the opposition and the ruling regime.
