Yemen, Politics, 5/12/1999
Yemen excluded the possiblity of convening a comprehensive Arab summit at the current time.
The Yemeni ambassador to Egypt, Ahmed Lokman, said that so far nothing has occurred that refers to the approach of convening an Arab summit, but he said are calm consultations among Arab leaders and foreign ministers and that as soon as adequate circumstances are available, calm preparation for convening the summit could take place.
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh directed invitations to the Arab heads of state during January for convening an Arab summit and said, "There is a discussion currently taking place between the Egyptian and Yemeni foreign ministries to find a joint understanding for the issues in the area as well as a strong cooperation as Yemen and Egypt are the two gates of the Red Sea and their future is very promising."
Lokman added that the Egyptian - Yemen higher joint committee will convene its meeting in the coming month in Cairo under the chairmanship of Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri to activate the agreements signed in the past and prepare for establishing the Egyptian - Yemeni joint bank as well as an investment company approved in the previous meeting in Sanaa with a capital estimated in the meeting at $100 million. They will also discuss aspects of cooperation in maritime fishery.
