Jordan-Syria, Politics, 5/12/1999
The director of the Jordan Valley Authority, Dureid Mahasenah, has announced that pumping water from Saham dam which will provide Jordan with some 8 million cubic meters of waters will start "within days," through the agreement set for the pumping water between Syria and Jordan, which says the pumping will start as of the beginning of June.
Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation Kamel Mahadin said that Syria will start providing Jordan with drinkable water from al-Yarmouk river through El-Ghour eastern canal.
The new announcement date came following a meeting that included officials from the ministries of water and irrigation in both Syria and Jordan, held in Amman on Tuesday.
Jordan's need of water during summer reaches nearly 154 million cubic meters and Amman suffered a water crisis last summer.
