Egypt-Jordan, Politics, 5/10/1999
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday received a message from King Abdullah Bin Hussein of Jordan, delivered by the speaker of the Jordanian Parliament, Abdul Hadi al-Majali, during his meeting with Mubarak in Cairo on Sunday.
Following the meeting, which was attended by the speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, Ahmad Fathi Srour, the Jordanian Parliament speaker said he discussed with the Egyptian President the Middle East peace process, the complexities caused by Israel to the Middle East peace process and the sufferings of the Palestinian people.
Al-Majali said that Jordan greatly appreciates President Mubarak and his policy to take the initiative and call for an Arab joint market.
The Jordanian speaker added that a just and comprehensive peace is the solution, as is needed by Israel just as much as anybody else. He added that, "Stability in the region will not be achieved without peace."
Al-Majali said his discussions with President Mubarak also dealt with means of strengthening parliamentary coordination between the two states and all bilateral issues.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said on Sunday that the first challenge facing the Arabs is Israel's continued occupation of the Arab territories and its bids to impose hegemony on potentials of the Middle East. In a speech he gave on Sunday at the Egyptian society of American University graduates in Cairo, the Egyptian FM said Israel's current policy is a fiasco, and all Arab rights should be restored.
The Egyptian FM stated that Israel has brought the Middle East peace process to a complete paralysis, asserting Egypt's rejection of attempts being made to impose an Israeli-tailored peace.
Moussa added the Israeli government wanted Egypt to present the Syrians, the Lebanese and the Palestinians on "a plate of silver" to the Israelis, reiterating that those who envisage such a presentation are "mad."
The Egyptian FM vowed his country's "steadfast commitment to the Arab fold and to the return of all the Israeli occupied Arab territories."
