Syria and Lebanon mark Martyrs Day
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 5/7/1999
Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Thursday, May 6, which marks the Turkish occupation hanging Syrian and Lebanese patriots in Beirut and Damascus on May 6, 1916, simultaneously, visited the martyrs monument at the Damascus Qasyoun mountain, where he laid a wreath.
He later in the day held a banquet at al-Chaab palace for the children of Syrian martyrs.
In Lebanon, a large celebration was held at the martyrs square in Beirut. It was attended by representatives of Lebanese President Emil Lahoud, Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri as well as by Lebanese citizens.
A speech read on behalf of President Lahoud by Deputy Premier Michael Murr highlighted the occasion, saying that on May 6, 1916, the Ottoman occupation forces simultaneously hanged Syrian and Lebanese nationalists in al-Burj square in Beirut and in al-Murjeh square in Damascus.
The martyrdom of both Syrian and Lebanese nationalists marked the remarkable historical and ties of destiny linking Syria and Lebanon together, he said.
