Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 5/6/1999
Algerian ambassador in Washington, Ramtane Laamamra, linked the opening of Algerian land borders with Morocco to the settlement of the existing problems between them.
The Algerian diplomat who was invited to a debate held Wednesday by the National Association of Arab-Americans on elections in his country said problems in bilateral relations are making it difficult to re-open land borders.
Asked to comment on the appeal launched by Moroccan Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, for the opening of borders between the two countries, the Algerian ambassador conceded that there is a need for real solutions so that the two neighboring states can improve their relations and construct the Arab Maghreb Union.
He also recalled that the present Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, had said during his campaign that he was not against the principle of re-opening the borders.
