Preparations for the Tunisian elections
Tunisia, Politics, 5/5/1999

The general election of the deputies council in Tunisia will be held on October 24.

The current council is comprised of 19 deputies who represent four opposition parties -- the Renovation Movement, the Formal Communist, the Movement of Democratic Socialists, and the Democratic Union party -- as well as 141 deputies representing the ruling Constitutional Democratic Rally Party (RCD), which dominates 84% of the seats.

The RCD started an early election campaign in the recent weeks by collecting the support of public organizations, vocational, social and cultural associations for its list, seeking to maintain the first position.

Current Prime Minister Hamad Karoui headed a meeting for the representatives of associations and the national organization as the deputy chairman of the RCD.
