Egyptian efforts to solve Sudanese problem
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 5/5/1999

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa held a meeting yesterday evening with the leader of the Sudanese Democratic Unionist Party, Mohammed Otham El-Merghany, who said after the meeting that they tackled the Sudanese problem and Egypt's efforts to solve it.

Concerning the outcome of the meeting and the talks held between Hassan Turabi, the secretary general of the ruling Sudanese National Conference, and opposition Ummah Party leader El-Sadek El-Mahdi, former Sudanese Prime Minister El-Merghani said: "We cannot rush matters," saying that he met El-Sadek El-Mahdi in Cairo before he left for Geneva to meet with Turabi.

El-Merghani said he is waiting for the details and outcomes of this meeting to express his opinion.

Commenting on the Doha accord concerning Sudanese - Eritrean reconciliation, El-Merghani said there will be no solution that is against the interest of the Sudanese people.

On the other hand, the Sudanese government is to resume peace negotiations with the rebels of Sudane People's Liberation Army in Nairobi on Monday.

The Sudanese newspaper "Public Opinion" said yesterday that the government has a great hope of the possibility of achieving great progress in the coming round of talks.

Official sources in the Sudanese Foreign Ministry stated that the reconciliation agreement between Asmara and Khartoum that took place in Doha last Sunday will increase the chances of reaching a peaceful agreement for the south problem.
