Morocco-Canada, Economics, 5/5/1999

The Moroccan-Canadian partnership council held in Montreal this May 3-5 pledged support to the subway and the garbage dump projects in Casablanca and to the promotion of citrus fruits and early vegetables exports to Canada.

In a statement it released, the council's second session pledged to closely follow up "the enforcement of free-trade agreements reached by Morocco with other countries and to endeavor for the promotion of Moroccan exports."

It also voiced readiness to continue to encourage technology transfer, particularly in training and environment projects.

The council, set up in 1996 during the Moroccan-Canadian commission, brings together 26 economic operators. The two governments have granted it a consultative mandate as regards trade, investments, trade policy and cooperation in technology.

The council decided to hold its upcoming session in spring 2000 in Casablanca.

Meanwhile, a Moroccan bank (BMCE) sponsored a study mission in Montreal for some twenty Moroccan enterprises interested in business contacts with Canadian peer. The Moroccan enterprises working in agri-food, electricity, construction, electronic devices, tourism and textile, explored prospects of obtaining technical assistance and signing partnership deals with Canadian firms.
