Syrian Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 5/5/1999
The Jordanian weekly al-Hadath said in its recent issue that a state of "concern" is prevailing among the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood members in Jordan over the consequences of the increased closeness between Amman and Damascus on them.
The paper quoted sources which it described as "well-informed," that fears of those members of paying the price of such closeness.
However, the paper said in its editorial on Tuesday that several Syrian Muslim Brotherhood members in Syria have expressed optimism over the positive results of the meeting held by Jordan's King Abdullah with the leadership of the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood, especially the great praise expressed by the King towards the "national, social and moral" role carried out by the Islamic movement in Jordan and the king's instructions to release some 16 members of the Muslim Brotherhood group who were arrested in earlier months for security reasons.
The paper also quoted these "well-informed" sources as saying that the positive relations between King Abdullah and the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood may be reflected positively on the relation between the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan with the regime in Damascus through maintaining a dialogue between the two sides via the Jordanian Brotherhood brothers.
