Seven reported killed in Algeria ambush
Algeria, Local, 5/4/1999

The Algerian dailies issued on Monday said that five military men and two members of the local guards were killed on Sunday in an ambush carried out by an armed group, just 70 km east of the capital, Algiers.

The dailies said that explosives planted on the road went off when military vehicles passed on in their way to supply a military unit center in a rural village. When the explosion took place, attackers positioned on the two sides of the road opened intensive fire on the vehicles, which resulted in the death of seven persons and wounding one member of the interior security forces.

Meanwhile, the Algerian daily Sawt al-Ahrar reported that a taxi driver was assassinated on Saturday night near the city, 80 km to the southern part of the capital.

The Algerian dailies on Monday also reported that four girls were kidnapped during a massacre which took place near Terat, 240 km, southwest of Algiers several days ago, during which nine persons were killed.
