Lebanese Parliament speaker confers with US ambassador on south Lebanon
Lebanon-USA, Politics, 5/4/1999

Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri on Monday reviewed with the US ambassador in Lebanon, David Satterfield, developments in Lebanon, especially conditions in the south.

Following the meeting, the US ambassador said that the US shows its strong desire to "see all sides embark on most degrees of self control." He added that the US continues its efforts in backing the April Understanding Monitoring Committee, noting that violence should not be the means to settle matters.

On how he describes the situation in south Lebanon in light of contacts he is currently making, the US ambassador said, "We are concerned with the situation in South Lebanon. This matter should be the preoccupation of all sides concerned and to work for calming down the situation and preserving peace and stability in south Lebanon."
