Report: Israeli units holds joint training with the Turkish air force
Israel-Turkey, Military, 5/3/1999

The French news bulletin "Top Urgent" has asserted that the Israeli "Sheldagh" unit will carry out joint exercises with elite units in the Turkish air force.

The French bulletin said that the Israeli national security council has adopted a decision to strengthen Sheldagh unit which represents the elite unit in the Israeli air forces.

The bulletin reported that this Israeli unit is responsible for carrying out key and precise operations and had, for instance, carried out the assassination of leader of the Hizbullah Party Abbas Musawi in Lebanon in 1992, the operation to release the hostages in Entebbe (Uganda) as well as the "Sholourni operation," transferring the Falasha Jews from Ethiopia to Israel in 1991.

The news bulletin said the decision which was taken by the Israeli National Security Council also includes increasing the unit's budget to develop its fighting capabilities. The unit works under top secret conditions and its members are not permitted to take photos.

The news bulletin added that despite the "top secrecy" in dealing with this unit, the secretary general for the Israeli National Security Council, David Ifri was given the green light in that the unit has to carry out joint exercises with elite units from the Turkish air force in one of the Turkish bases in the center of Anadulia and in the presence of American army officers.

The bulletin stressed that this is the first time this unit has been permitted to make training with allied foreign special forces units.
