European Union stops imports of Egyptian peanuts
Egypt-European Union, Economics, 4/30/1999

The commissariat of the European Union in Cairo yesterday formally notified the Egyptian government the stoppage of imports of Egyptian peanuts, due to harmful chemicals which cause cancer.

The Egyptian trade bureau in Brussels notified the Egyptian trade and agriculture ministers in the second half of last September of the warning directed by the EU to the Egyptian trade bureau at Brussels of the importance of convincing Egyptian parties to deal with this problem by the end of April.

Moreover the EU's committee for plant health discovered the continuous appearance of harmful chemicals in Egyptian imports, leading to the taking the decision to stop imports, despite the reduction in the volume of Egyptian peanut exports to 7,104 tonnes this season from 13,000 tonnes last season.
