UNRWA donor countries meet in Amman

An unofficial meeting of major donor countries and host governments for the Palestinian refugees started in Amman on Wednesday with the participation of some 26 Arab and foreign countries including Syria.

During their two-day deliberations, the participants in the meeting discussed several matters concerning to the financial status of UNRWA and the services it renders to the Palestinian refugees in areas of its operations in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In an inaugural speech, Jordan's deputy premier said the meeting which brings together senior officials from UNRWA's donor and host countries comes at a very critical time, noting the stumbled Middle East peace process, especially on the Palestinian track.

He stressed that Jordan will continue its efforts to strengthen the march of peace in the region on the ground and that such a peace would represent the best choice for the region, a matter which necessities revitalizing this march not only on the Palestinian track but also on the Lebanese and Syrian tracks.

He indicated the key role played by UNRWA through the past five decades with the support of the donor countries until their cause is settled according to UN resolution 194 and UN resolutions concerned.

The participants held a closed-door meeting during which they reviewed UNRWA's conditions and their respective countries' perspectives toward resolving the financial discrepancy from which the agency suffers and means of expanding the base of the donor countries to include new countries.
