Khartoum demands urgent aid to stop meningitis
Sudan, Health, 4/29/1999
Sudanese Minister of Health Mahdi Nemr warned that numerous persons in Sudan are about to be afflicted by meningitis, which has already led to the death of 750 persons in Sudan.
Nemr said that the situation will deteriorate further in the near future, due to high temperatures and the start of summer. He urged foreign governments to present more than $5 million to combat this disease.
Official sources in the Sudanese Ministry of Health stated that the disease began to spread quickly with the rise of weather temperatures, at a time when rescue agencies have begun an emergency program to vaccinate against the disease.
