UN envoy confers with Ethiopian premier
Ethiopia-Eritrea, Politics, 4/29/1999
UN special envoy to Africa Muhammad Sahnoun held talks on Wednesday in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi centered on the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
AFP said that so far no official explanations have been made on the content of the talks, noting that an African diplomat in Addis Ababa said Sahnoun's mission was on how to get out of the current bottleneck between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The office of the spokesman for the Ethiopian government said on Wednesday that Sahnoun, who arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday in the framework of a mediation carried out by the UN, met with several Ethiopian officials including Deputy Foreign Minister Tikida Aleimu.
The same source explained that the UN mediation is being made by a close cooperation with the Organization of African Unity because an African team visited New York in the past 15 days to hold consultations on means of implementing the agreement reached in the framework of the Organization of African Unity and deploy peacekeeping forces within six months in the areas under conflict between the two countries.
