Egyptian efforts to start discussions between Sudanese government, opposition
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 4/28/1999
Egyptian official diplomatic sources in Cairo revealed difficulties that hinder holding a discussion between the Sudanese government and opposition and the two convening at the negotiating table.
The sources confirmed the existence of Egyptian efforts to break the situation's deadlock, due to each party's insistence on their own opinion. The sources said Egypt asked the two sides to make concessions.
At the same time, the sources expressed Egypt's concern toward the division of Nile water if southern Sudan separates and stated that establishing a new state in southern Sudan would raise questions regarding the Nile water agreement for the year 1995 between Egypt and Sudan.
