The Jordanian detainees in Syria
Syria-Syria, Politics, 4/28/1999
The Jordanian ambassador in Damascus, Nasouh al-Majali, has said that a joint Syrian-Jordanian security committee will meet in Damascus within the coming days in order to discuss joint security matters. He expressed his hope that the question of the Jordanian detainees in Syria will be discussed during the meeting.
In a telephone conversation with the Jordanian daily al-Dostour issued on Tuesday, al-Majali added that Syrian President Hafez al-Assad "had expressed during his talks with King Abdullah his interest in this matter."
Al-Majali indicated that no clear number is available for the Jordanian detainees in Syria because, "When certain detainees are freed the Jordanian embassy does not know about that."
The Jordanian ambassador noted that any "Jordanian citizen who wants to visit the detainees has to ask the Jordanian embassy which will write for the Syrian Ministry of the Interior which by its turn automatically approves the visit."
The Jordanian daily quoted Jordanian diplomatic sources as saying that the number of Jordanian detainees in Syrian jails does not exceed one hundred, and that they are not political detainees in the real sense of the word. They were rather tried for committing various crimes that had no relevance to politics.
