Syria-Turkey, Politics, 4/27/1999

Syrian-Turkish talks started on Monday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Transportation in Damascus. The two sides discussed transport and means of improving mutual relations.

The Syrian side was chaired by the director general of the railway transport department, Salah Ahmad, and by the Turkish Assistant secretary at the Transport Ministry.

The Syrian chief spoke about the need to improve bilateral relations between Syria and Turkey in the interests of the two countries. He indicated that the two countries aspire to establish "developed relations in the areas air, sea and land transport and to promote bilateral economic ties."

The chairman of the Turkish delegation expressed his confidence that the two countries, who are linked by good relations that are deeply rooted in history, will gain good results and improve their economic relations, especially in the areas of transport.

Specialized joint bilateral committees were formed from the two sides in the domains of land, sea and air transport and railways. These committees started discussions on means of promoting land transport relations and passengers and goods transportation, and the process of issuing visas between the two countries.
