Report: Jordanian mediation between Syrian and the PA
Regional, Politics, 4/27/1999
The Jordanian daily al-Dostour issued on Monday said that Jordan is now qualified to start a mediation between Damascus and the Palestinian Authority, and this topic was seriously debated during the visit of King Abdullah to Damascus.
The Jordanian daily said the king conveyed the desire of the Palestinian leadership for mediation in order to bring together the viewpoints with the Syrian leadership on the grounds of several interests that both the "Syrian and Palestinian sides had proved to have in common."
In its Monday commentary, the paper added that Damascus is a strong backing element for the Palestinian Authority, but it is absent throughout the years of negotiations for reasons pertaining to the nature of the Palestinian performance during the past phase, a matter which was viewed by Damascus as concessions against an intransigent Israeli position.
The Jordanian paper continued that if the Palestinian attitude in the current phase becomes closer to the Syrian stand in standing firm in confrontation of the Likud government, Damascus would eventually find in the Palestinian position support for its stance and therefore the two sides will share a common position towards the same foe, a position which the Syrian and Palestinian leaders have not reached yet even towards Netanyahu.
