Morocco is determined to promote human rights education
Regional-Morocco, Politics, 4/26/1999
Morocco's premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, renewed on Friday the Kingdom's attachment and firm resolve to promote human rights culture and education.
In his inaugural speech of the 1st congress of Arab Human rights movement convening in Casablanca (Morocco's economic capital), Youssoufi said Morocco has made outstanding progress in matters of human rights protection and affirmed that dialogue is underway between the government and human rights organizations to consolidate the state of law, enhance democratic process and protect public freedom.
He also stressed that Morocco, which has ratified several international human rights conventions, is for the holding of an international conference on the implementation of the Geneva IV convention in the Arab territories occupied by Israel.
Youssoufi called Arab human rights activists to pool efforts and launch an international campaign to draw the international community's attention to the need of applying the Geneva convention in the Arab territories usurped by Israel.
Youssoufi also urged Arab human rights organizations to shoulder their responsibilities and double efforts for the consolidation of human rights culture and principles in the Arab world.
The 1st congress of Arab human rights movement, which opened works Friday, is organized by the Cairo-based human rights center to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the universal human rights declaration.
The encounter's agenda includes debates on the situation of human rights in the Arab world, impediments to its improvement and the position of the international community regarding human rights issues in Arab countries.
The congress -- to close doors this weekend-- is attended by around one hundred experts from 15 Arab states in addition to some observers from various international human rights bodies.
The encounter will adopt "the Casablanca Declaration" that will serve as a fundamental and moral charter for the Arab movement of human rights and as leading principles of the movement.
