Jordanian king confers with Mordechai
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 4/26/1999

King Abdullah of Jordan met on Sunday in Amman with the leader of the Israeli Center party, who is also a candidate to become Israeli prime minister in the forthcoming elections, Yitzhak Mordechai.

Well-informed sources in Amman told journalists the meeting concentrated on means of revitalizing the Middle East peace process, halting unilateral actions, especially land confiscation, intensifying settlements -- especially in Jerusalem -- and avoiding practices and steps that would help the escalation of the situation and create disputes.

During the meeting, the Jordanian king asserted the importance of "Israel's commitment to implementing agreements signed with the two sides so as to achieve comprehensive peace and resuming negotiations on all tracks from the point at which they broke off, as well as not to resort to pretexts in order to freeze the Middle East peace."

Mordechai, the former Israeli defense minister, stressed his adherence to the Middle East peace process and adherence to what had been signed in earlier agreements to achieve security, stability and peace for the interests of all.

Earlier in the day, Mordechai met the director of the Jordanian general intelligence, Samih al- Bateikhi.

Talks dealt with current developments, the Middle East peace process and Jordanian-Israel relations.

Meanwhile, the Likud Party chaired by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, criticized the visit of Mordechai to Jordan.

The Israeli minister to tourism and deputy prome minister, who is responsible for the electoral campaign for the Likud Party, Moshe Katzav, released a statement in which he criticized the visit saying it is not the appropriate time, claiming the desire of Arab officials to intervene in Israeli elections.

Moreover, Israeli military radio announced that leader of the Israeli Labor Party, prime minsiterial candidate Ehud Barak',hopes to pay a visit to Jordan before the first round of the elections on May 17.
