President Al-Assad, King Abdallah discuss water, security issues
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 4/22/1999
Syrian sources announced today that the first summit between Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Jordan's King Abdullah in Damascus has witnessed an agreement on treating the basic issues in the two countries' relations on different levels. They also agreed on continuing contacts and consultations between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Amman broadcast that they have agreed on holding a meeting at a later time under the chairmanship of the two countries' prime ministers to discuss the issues of water, al-Wahda dam, and security issues. They have also agreed on the importance of comprehensive peace and the abidance of Israel with all it has committed to and the resumption of the suspended negotiations.
The expanded bilateral meetings have taken place in a positive atmosphere where the two sides exchanged points of view on the best means of treating the current situation of Arab relations and moving toward solidarity, cooperation and coordination.
Thus both Syria and Jordan are concerned with the stalemated peace process on Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian tracks.
