Dialogue in the Saudi society on women's role
Saudi Arabia, Culture, 4/22/1999
A high-ranking Saudi official who refused to be identified has asserted that Saudi Arabia is working to expand the volume of interaction and cooperation with women.
He called for opening a family dialogue in the Saudi society in which women can take part to expand their role. He said that Saudi women are educated and have higher scientific qualifications but still can't take their due role because of psychological (traditional) reasons rather than practical and religious ones.
He asserted that society can be only balanced through giving women their due role.
He continued that the call for women's work does not mean spoiling women and that, "Obstructing her capabilities will lead to what we do not want and she does not want either."
He added, "The society has to crystallize a vision away from awaiting the release of certain decisions," noting that personal and individual views so far available are not enough to enable women to benefiting and using their own skills and qualifications.
He asserted that what is needed is "balance, but without violating the principles in the jurisdiction of the Islamic Sharia." He concentrated on the need to avoid sensitive matters like "revealing the face" or even driving the car, because the first case is linked to "Khilafa" origin and the second is a technical matter. He asserted that Islam is a religion which addresses all, noting, "There are no clergies in Saudi Arabia."
