Khatami to visit Syria on May 10
Regional-Iran, Politics, 4/21/1999
Iranian President Muhammad Khatami will start his Arab tour on May 10. His first stop will be Syria, from which he will head to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Official sources in Tehran said Khatami will arrive in Syria on May 10. Syria will be the first Arab state to be visited by Khatami since he assumed power 20 months ago. He will hold talks with President Hafez al-Assad.
Iranian sources said that starting President Khatami's from Damascus is natural due to the remarkable strategic relations between Syria and Iran since the launching of the Iranian revolution.
President al-Assad has visited Tehran twice since Khatami assumed the presidency. The first visit was to see off former President Hashami Rafsanjani and to congratulate his successor and the second was during the most recent OIC summit 1997.
Iranian sources asserted that the visit of the Iranian president to Syria, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in one tour reveals "Tehran's desire to have its relations and ties with the Arab and Gulf states up to the level of its relations with Damascus."
