King Hassan II pays tribute to former foreign minister
Morocco, Politics, 4/20/1999

King Hassan II on Monday paid tribute to Abdellatif Filali, at the end of his mission as foreign affairs and cooperation minister.

The sovereign, who was flanked by Crown Prince Sidi Mohammed and Prince Moulay Rachid, decorated Filali with the Throne Wissam of Grand Officer Order.

The King stressed that the reception was hosted "in recognition of the services rendered by the man, the citizen, the statesman, the minister and the companion."

King Hassan II recalled the relations that existed between his grandfather, Moulay Youssef, and Filali's father, underlining that these relations continued with the late King Mohammed V.

"Following the example of your father, you worked at the side of our late father and at our own side," the king said, adding "I have always found in you a mobilized citizen, ready to assume all missions and all responsibilities."

The king told Filali his services might be needed for some specific missions.

Abdellatif Filali expressed deep gratitude for the royal solicitude and his pride at the speech delivered by the King.

The ceremony was attended by the Royal advisors, Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi and the members of the Cabinet.

Besides the foreign affairs and cooperation department, Filali, who was replaced two weeks ago by Mohamed Benaissa, also served as prime minister and information minister in addition to other key diplomatic positions.
